HUGE CONVOYS
LARGEST IN THE WAR TO MALTA AND RUSSIA The largest convoys of the war prior to the Anglo-American invasion of North-western Africa, were the relatively recent Malta convoy and the more recent Russian convoy. The latter carried the largest total of munitions —aircraft, tanks, guns, high explosives, etc. —ever transported in a single voyage from Britain and the United States. It was escorted by 75 British warships through the waters in which it might be intercepted by German warships, raiders and submarines.
Well over 3000 planes, 4000 tanks, 30,000 army vehicles and 831,000 tjns of miscellaneous shipments, including shells, small arms, ammunition, machine tools, etc., were sent to Rissia by Britain and America during the year ending Octobei’ 1. Some time ago it was announced that Britain had met her supply commitments to Russia by over 100 per cent, and the United States had met hers by approximately 75 per cent. Among Canada’s shipments to Russia has been her total output of Valentine tanks.
