OBITUARY

MR F. W. W. HUBBARD

FORMER GOLDFIELDS RESIDENT The death has occurred in Hamilton of Mr Frank William Ward Hubbard, son of the late Mr Frank Hubbard, of Pukekohe. Born and educated at Christchurch, Mr Hubbard came as a young man to the Auckland district, where he gained his great knowledge of timber in the sawmilling and carpentering business. Later he took up land at Te Hoe and Orini. He was instrumental in bringing the first school to Te Hoe, and was appointed commissioner by the Education Department. For several years he was a member of the Maungawhara River Board. Mr Hubbard retired to Hamilton over’ 20 years ago. For some four or five years the late Mr Hubbard resided at Waitekauri where he- engaged in sawmilling and carpentering, becoming well-known throughout the Goldfields while in the district.

Interested in public affairs and educational matters, Mr Hubbard was for many years an active member of the Fairfield School Committee, and was responsible for a great deal of the school’s early progress. He was also for several years a member of the Hamilton Technical High School Board of Managers. A keen horticulturist, he was a past secretary of the Hamilton Horticultural Society and an enthusiastic exhibitor at the shows. Mr Hubbard held the office of Noble Grand and Grand Master of the Waitekauri and Golden Cross Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows and was a member of Lodge Ohinemuri, Masonic Order. During his later years he was unable, owing to illhealth, to take an active part in public affairs, but nevertheless remained keenly interested in the progress of the town.

Mr Hubbard is survived by his wife, two sons, Captain C. Hubbard and Captain A. W. Hubbard, who is serving with the Eighth Army, and a daughter, Mrs Sidney Hawken, of Hamilton.
