HAVE YOU EVER TRIED THIS?

New filling for cinnamon, coffee or ginger-sponge. To one cup of water add one tablespoon each of treacle and sugar. Heat slowly, add quarter-teaspoon mixed spice, thicken with arrowroot and cook till firm. Spread warm mixture lightly over the warm cake and add top layer. Cinnamon or ginger can be substituted for mixed spice. Do not tear the covering paper off a new box of face powder. With a thick pin or darning-needle pierce holes all over the top and use the box as a shaker, shaking the powder on to the puff. Contents last at least three times as long this way, and the perfume does not fade so quickly. When making a meringue add a tedspoonful of cold water to the eggwhite before commencing to whip it for meringue. It will froth much more quickly. When you open a tin of preserved cream pour off the thin part and use only the thick portion, which if beaten up in a basin with two tablespoons of fresh milk and a teaspoonful of sugar is hardly distinguishable from fresh cream.

Serve this tasty sauce with boiled, or steamed fish: Stew two or three chopped tomatoes in half-cup of water till tender, rub through a coarse sieve, return puree to saucepan and add a tablespoon of grated cheese, a teaspoon of minced /parsley, half teaspoon of lemon-juice, nut of butter and seasoning. Bring to boil and thicken with cornflour.

When making' steamed puddings slip a used rubber ring from a preserving jar over the top to hold the Cioth on tightly; it can easily be slipped downwards to take the cloth off. This saves a lot of tying and untying of string.
