MILITARY TRAFFIC
WEAR ON COUNTRY ROADS FURTHER DISCUSSION Another discussion' on the extraordinary wear and tear on county roads which had been caused in the district by recent military camps, took place at the May meeting ..of the Piako County Council. Approval was given to the steps the clerk had. taken 1 in the attempt to secure reimbursement by the State for the damage on a free basis for all expenditure above the amount of maintenance for an average taken over the last three years. Earlier information was to the effect that this had been agreed upon, but a second letter from the District Engineer of the Public Works intimated that the subsidy would be on a £ for £ basis only. The matter has also been taken up with the New Zealand Counties’ Association,
The road which suffered the worst damage in this district is the Te Aroha-Gordon one and the condition it had reached as a result of the passage of military traffic was warmly commented upon by Gr. D. J. Burgess.
