FORTY YEARS AGO
BAND ON K AIK APO HILL PAEROA CHORAL SOCIETY “MERRY MEN OF SHERWOOD” (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of May 26, 1903) . On Sunday afternoon the Hauraki Band rendered a number of selections on the top of Kaikapo Hill and a large crowd gathered to listen to the music. The volunteers were also present in uniform and the hill presented quite a lively appearance. During the afternoon a collection was taken up in aid of the expenses in connection with the ceremony of unveiling the Bradford Memorial. * * * * The Paeroa Choral Society had a splendid practice of the “Merry Men of Sherwood” last evening at the Wharf Street Hall, under the baton of Mr Harston, the society’s conductor. The hall is now provided with a new Haake piano,' one of the best of that popular make, of powerful organ-like tone, and with the very latest improvements. New side lamps have been added to the stage and the seating accommodation is being increased. The floor is perfect, * and the hall is likely to be largely patronised during the season.
