BATTERY AT KARANGAHAKE EFFORT TO KEEP IT IN AREA A meeting of miners and residents of Karangahake was held in the Miners’ Union Hall, Karangahake, on Saturday night, Mr D. Leach presiding, when the question X>f the purchase of Morrison’s battery at Karangahake was discussed with a view to making it available for miners and the district and . men at present in the Armed Forces who would be returning to mining after the war. Mr E. J. Scoble, inspector of mines at Waihi, was in attendance. Mr LeacTi explained to the meeting as there had been a danger of the battery being sold and removed from the district representations' had been made through Mr J. Thorn, M.P., to the Minister of Mines and Mr Scoble had been instructed to investigate the position. The unanimous opinion of the meeting was that there were still a number of places at Karangahake which could be worked on a paying basis and would be worked by small parties when men were discharged from the Armed Forces after the war.
It was decided to take Mr Seoble over the area to inspect the prospects of the different lodes.
A decision to ask the Ohinemuri ■County Council to make the No. 8 road available for vehicle traffic to as far as Glasgow Valley, south of the trig, was also made by the meeting. This would give access to the various lodes and enable the quartz to be brought down to the ba.tery. It was arranged that a further conference be held ‘after Mr Scoble had inspected the field.
