A CLOSE FINISH

VUGLAR JUST GETS HOME GOOD RUN BY FAST PACK HARRIERS GO CROSS COUNTRY Despite unfavourable weather conditions the Paeroa Harrier Club conducted another weekly run from the Paeroa Domain grandstand on Saturday. Two packs were formed, the fast pack being led by F. Sharp, and the slow pack by M. Wallan. The slow pack chose a course consisting of road and one lap of the racecourse. A. Vosper was prominent all the way and 'is running so well that he must be given a good chance in the club road championship to be held on June 5. Two newcomers to the club, G. Vlahovich and A. Currie, ran exceptionally well and should in a few weeks be equal to giving M. Wallan a good race in the club championship. Maurice Wallan ran his usual good race and was first man home.

The fast pack tan over a crosscountry course of 4i miles. Grey Vuglar and J. Fowler were to the fore most of the way, followed closely by F. Sharp.

It was evident one mile from home that it was anybody’s race- and the pace was clapped on as each made an endeavour to take the lead. The first to show up was F. Sharp -who took the lead from J. Fowler and G. Vuglar. With 400 yards to go, Sharp had increased his lead to about' '2O yards and looked as if he would be ’first man home. At this stage Vuglar, who was 50 yards behind Fowler, began a forward move. With great determination the present High School champion wore down the leader, but he was not to have things all his own way as Fowler hung on to him and over the final 10 yards they fought a neck and neck battle. It was only Vuglar’s speed that enabled him to he first, .with ‘Fowler three yards behind, closely followed by Sharp five yards further back. Next week the club will commence their weekly points runs and all interested are invited to attend. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS PROGRAMME FOR SEASON ' A committee meeting of the Paeroa Harriers’ Club was held last week when it was decided to commence the weekly points runs from next Saturday, May 22.
