ARE THEY PRECLUDED?

FARMERS AND REHABILITATION APPOINTMENT TO COMMITTEES Does the Rehabilitation Act preclude the farming industry or farmers having direct representation on the rehabilitation Committees which have already been set up, is a question which the Thames District Council of Primary Production has sent to the Minister in Charge of Rehabilitation.

At the May meeting of the Thames i council, members discussed a reply re- \ ceived’ from the National Council, Wellington, to the council’s representations that district councils should be allowed to take some part in assisting or in- any other way helping the settlement of returned soldiers on the land, the National -Council’s reply being that it considered the matter not within the province of the national or district councils.

Advisory Capacity, It was moved by Mr H. S. Curtis, seconded by Mr E. W. Harris, that the National Council fee written to and asked why district councils should not be allowed to do something direct in this matter as it is the unaniinous opinion of members of this council, as practical farmers of long experience, that they can be of some help in this matter in an advisory capacity. Later in -the meeting members again discussed the question of rehabilitation and that district councils should be allowed to have representation on committees, set up in their areas to represent the farming industry and to give such practical advice and assistance to sucji committee® in assisting returned soldiers who desire to go on to the land; Mr D. Courtney moved and Mr HCurtis seconded that the Hon. Minister in Charge of Rehabilitation be written to asking if the Rehabilitation Act precludes the farming industry or farmers, having direct representation on the rehabilitation committees
