DRINKING AT DANCES

MEN BEFORE PAEROA COURT

SATURDAY NIGHT INCIDENTS

Liquor which was found in their possession near a dance hall while a dance was in progress cost two men £3 each in the Paeroa Court on Monday. Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., presided. »

Raymond Meas Keogh was charged that on March 27 he had been in possession of beer in the vicinity of the Civic Hall, Paeroa, while a dance was being held. Keogh wrote pleading guilty. •

Constable J. L. Brown stated that he had found Keogh near the dance with a bottle of beer in one hand and a - young lady in the other. A fine of £3 with costs 10s was imposed.

Alexander Lowe was charged that on April 24 he was in possession of intoxicating liquor in the vicinity of the Civic Hall while a dance was being held. Lowe wrote to the court stating that he was not taking part in the dance.

Constable H. E. Hollinshead stated that on the night in question he had been on duty in the Thames road and had seen a car drive up in front of the Masonic Hall. When he had investigated he had found a man and a woman in the car and had asked the man if he had any liquor in the car. The man had said he had none but he had searched the car and found a half-bottle of beer in the front seat.

When asked, added. Constable Hollinshead, Lowe had said that he had just come from the dance to have a quiet drink and was then going back to it.

A fine of £3 with costs 10s was imposed. Constable Brown asked that no penalty be imposed upon M. L. Chamberlain, who was charged with being

in control of beer in the vicinity of the .Civic Hall while a dance was in progress on March 20.

Constable Brown stated that Chamberlain had driven a truck to the dance in which there were three bottles of beer. -Chamberlain was now overseas and he asked that he be merely convicted and discharged.
