FORTY YEARS AGO
ACROSS OHINEMURI RIVER BRIDGE TO BE ERECTED SLAUGHTERHOUSE LICENSE (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of May 12, 1903)
The new bridge to be erected over the Ohinemuri River at Pae-
roa is to be 14ft. wide instead of 12ft as at first decided upon. The tender for the iron work for a 12-foot bridge was £650, and on the council cabling to the tenderers—Handyside and Co., 'Derby, England, as to the cost ‘of a bridge 14 feet wide, the reply came that the ironwork would cost £730. The extra £BO will, we think, be well spent.
The County Council decided at its meeting recently to , recommend to the Government the application of John Pawelka, of Waikino, for a renewal of his slaughterhouse license. This practically means that the meat will have to 'be slaughtered at the county abattoirs at Mackaytown, and the Waikino people will have, the satisfaction of knowing that the meat has been inspected by the county official appointed for the purpose. There was a little difference of opinion at the council meeting as to whether the slaughtering of the meat at the abattoirs will affect the price of meat at Waikino, but most of the councillors considered it would not make meat any dearer than at present.
