CELEBRATION AT

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETS

AN INTERESTING AFTERNOON

Miss A. Paul presided over a large attendance of members and friends at the May' meeting of the Ngatea Women’s Institute. The hall had' been decorated with white flowers —symbol of Mother’s Day, which would be celebrated the following Sunday. Each member on entering the hall was ■presented with a white flower and Mother’s Day card conveying greetings,- etc.

The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song followed by the Institute prayer.

Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Miss Hopper, foundation member of the A.D.F.W.1., and to the late Pte. Black, husband of a former member.

Routine business was discussed and correspondence dealt with. The roll call, cooking without sugar, was fairly well answered. Before the social hour commenced Miss Paul presented beautiful white -bouquets to the three members, Mesdames A. 'Cleave, C. H. Waite and T. Wheeler, who had the largest families.

A shoulder spray was presented to Mrs H. Flavell, who is leaving the district and a letter and spray is to be forwarded to Mrs A. Ward, who left during the week. Mrs T. Hughes very ably read an article on the origin and keeping of Mother’s Day.

The play, "Red Wax,” which is to be presented in Auckland at the end of the month, was staged by the following members: —Announcer, Mrs A. Cleave; performers, Miss A. Paul, Mesdames S. Coppins, T. Hughes, E. Lee, M. Grbich and Miss Audrey Dalgety. This was very well acted and was heartily applauded by the audience. The winners of the various competitions were: — . Best Bloom: Miss Irwin, 1; Mesdames Cole and Grbich, dead heat, 2. Vase of Chrysanthemums: Mrs Wheeler, 1; Miss Irwin, 2. Three Potatoes: Mrs Grbich, 1; Mrs M. Dalgey, 2. The sales table did good business. Rompers made from waste material.: Wbo-.'er ' € Afternoon tea was served by the

hostesses and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
