FOREST FIRES

VALUE OF BAROMETER USE IN FOREST AREAS The value of a barometer in forecasting heavy north-west winds was debated at length at a sitting of the Selwyn Plantations Board. The chairman (Mr N. C. Kensington) opposed the purchase of a barometer on the grounds that it was not necessary, but it was pointed out by several members of the board that accurate fore-

casts of nor’-westers could be ob tained from a barometer.

This, it was stated was necessary, as the fire guards could be warned of the approach of such a wind and could exercise greater caution. Eventually the superintendent (Mr E. A. Cooney) was authorised to purchase a barometer to a cost of up/to £5.
