AID TO SETTLERS

REDUCTION OF GRANTS . PROTEST OAMARU .. A request that a protest .should be made against the reduction or cancellation of financial aid grants to soldiers because of the recent increases in pay and allowances has been forwarded'to the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association by its Oamaru branch. It is understood that many men have been, affected in .consequence of this action.

Reporting on the position at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru branch the .secretary, Mr A. Piper, said he had written -to the headquarters of the Returned -Services’ Association, pointing out that the men’s pay and allowances had been 1 specifically increased because of the higher cost of living. If that were .so, any increase in pay would be cancelled by the increase in -the cost of living and, therefore, those in receipt of aid were in no better financial position. In the circumstances, Mr Piper contended that there should be no alteration in the grants from the Financial Aid Board. , •

The meeting confirmed the secretary’s action, and the hope was expressed that headquarters would make urgent representations.
