PILLS FOR THE JAPS.
NEW AUSTRALIAN MUNITIONS ARMOUR-PIERCING BOMBS Two of the latest major achievements- in the Commonwealth Government’s premier munitions plant are the manufacture of 2501 b semi-armour-piercing aircraft bombs and quantity production of the Bofors automatic anti-aircraft gun. Late in 1937 it made its first gun of any description and now. with its original staff augmented by employees, men and- women, with no trade experience and with only four months training in technical schools, it is producing many classes of ordnance.
When war came it produced 3.7!n A.A. guns in record time. Many problems were solved by experiment on the job and improvisation meant great difficulties with the trainees. These problems included the drilling and rifling of long ■small-calibre barrels, complete barrels including breech blocks for 25-pounders and the Vickers A.A. predictor.
Two shell-shops produce more than 30 different types of projectiles. All tools, jigs and gauges were made ip the factory’s own tool room.
