“DO US REALLY WELL”
PAEROA SOLDIER’S THANKS
COMFORTS PROVIDED TN CAMP
To enable the.general public of Paeroa and the* surrounding districts to gain some idea of the benefit which men in the Armed Forces receive from the Patriotic Funds a Paeroa soldier, Pte. Lauri Berry,. writing from an island in the Pacific gives instances of what is at present being done for the men in his unit with this money. Pte. Berry writes as under:— “I see by the last 'Gazette I received that Mr Edwin Edwards, the Mayor of Paeroa, was appealing for patriotic funds so I shall outline a little of what they do for us here. “First we have the big Y.M.C.A. tent, a huge place with a library and tables and forms where we can sit and write or read. Games are also played, cards, table tennis and many others. A big wireless is provided where we get all the news and listen to our own stations in New Zealand.
“Paper and ink for writing is also available and at 8 o’clock each night tea and biscuits. There is a permanent officer in charge who organises card evenings and last night they put on a concert for two hours—a really good show. “In fact they do us really well and help to brighten the evenings which take a lot of Alling in as it is dark before 7 and there is nothing to do and no places to go out of camp.”
