USEFUL WORK
PAEROA-HAURAKI R.S.A,
MANY MORE PROBLEMS REVIEW OF YEAR’S ACTIVITIES 1— Another year of useful work was disclosed in the annual report and. balance sheet for the year ended March 31, 1943, which was presented at the 12th. annual meeting of the iPaeroaHauraki Returned Services Association held in Paeroa recently. The report continued as under:— “The year has introduced new problems in connection with present war conditions and we can anticipate many more'problems and scope for activities with the return of men from overseas. So far thirteen men from the present war have returned and joined up with this branch. Increase in Membership “The most pleasing feature to report this year is the splendid increase in this branch’s membership which now stands at 281 as compared with 241 last year. In 1939 the membership was 141. This result has been achieved mainly through the untiring efforts of our hon. treasurer, Mr D. Vincent and hon. secretary, Mr J. M. Craig.
“Fortunately we have not been called upon to render extensive assistance to any returned men
the period under review, but we can anticipate many calls in the future. Total payments in this respect were only £3O. “We'have made the usual grant to the Thames R.S.A. to assist its ladies’ committee in providing comforts to returned servicemen in the Thames hospital. At this juncture we would like to express our thanks to the Thames Ladies’ Committee for the excellent work it is doing. Sympathy Expressed It is with great regret we report the deaths of two of our members during the year. Mr Herbert (“Punk’)’ Pennell and Mr Tom Richmond. Both of them were tendered an R.S.A. funeral. We also express oui’ regret at the deaths of Mrs Tom Short and Mrs Harris, two of our ready helpers, who passed away during the year. Letters of. sympathy were forwarded in each case to relatives. “The balance sheet recalls a healthy position for there are credits in all the accounts. The general account has a credit of £122 19s 7d and we have £169 17s 6d in the Poppy Fund. The credit in the canteen account is £lB IDs 10d, showing a total of £3ll 8s od. Anzac Day Parade The executive committee in Paeroa has been keeping a constant watch on association affairs and the general committee has had three meetings'. The Anzac Day parade was the best held for many years and was well attended by our members. The annual re-union, as usual was a great success. The committee desires to place on record the association’s thanks and appreciation to the ladies of the Women’s Institute and other ladies who so kindly and efficiently assisted in selling poppies for the association. Concluding, the president, Mr Edwin Edwards expressed thanks to the officers of the branch, mentioning particularly Messrs J. M. Craig, D. A. Vincent and J. H. Walmsley. The report and balance sheet were adopted without comment beyond that of -Mr J. H. Bartlett who, when seconding- the president’s motion, congratulated the branch on its work. Much of this was to do with pensionsabout which publicity was not desirable.
