SPINNERS IN THE BAY

WORK FOR SERVICE MEN WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEMBERS On Wednesday, April 14, several members of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute met in the residence of Mrs H. McKenzie to pursue their work further in the field of spinning. The produce of their labour is to be used for service-men, and the practical result of their work proves the extent of the spinner’s enthusiasm.

The scene was a particularly busy one on Wednesday evening when several spinning wheels hummed as sheep’s fleece was transformed into threads of wool suitable for knitting. Although members of the spinning circle meet each week, last week’s meeting was made more interesting by the presence of Mr and Mrs Clayton, of Manurewa, Auckland,, who had kindly visited the circle in order to give members a few hints on successful spinning.

Mr and Mrs Clayton are both keen spinners aifd samples of their spun wool were shown to the pre- ' sent. Genuine was the admiration of , the black and white wool which was beautifully spun, twined and knitted into socks. Samples of home-spun . and home-dyed wool were also shown and local spinners were given a few hints on successful spinning. i

Supper concluded the evening’s activity and thanks were expressed to Mr and Mrs Clayton. ,
