ANZAC DAY 1943

COMMEMORATION PLANS CEREMONY AT CENOTAPH SUNDAY’S ARRANGEMENTS This year’s observance of Anzac Day will be one of particular interest and importance. It will be the fourth celebration of New Zealand’s war day under war conditions and on that account there will probably be larger parades than have ever before been seen.

This appears certain in Paeroa where plans for the observance of the day have been completed and the details are now available for issuing to all parties concerned. The arrangements made for this year will follow generally the line adopted on former occasions. At 1.45 p.m. there will be a parade at the Post Office under command of Major Bartlett of Returned Servicemen, Home Guard, Cadets, Girl Guides, Fire Brigade, Women’s War Service Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, St. John Ambulance.

Scholars of Paeroa District High School, scholars of St. Joseph’s Convent School and Brownies and Cubs will be assembled at the Cenotaph. At 2 p.m. the parade, led by The Paeroa Municipal Band, will leave the Post Office and proceed via Normanby road, through Arney street entrance to the Cenotaph.

His Worship the Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, will take the salute as the

parade passes the Borough Council Chambers.

The scripture lesson will be read by Major T. R. Moore of the Paeroa Salvation Army and Mr T. E. Jamieson will give the address.

The commemoration service is scheduled to commence at 2.15 p.m., and after the National Anthem led by the Paeroa Municipal Band floral tributes will be placed on the Cenotaph. Floral tributes will also be placed on the Bradford Memorial by veterans of the South African War.

A hymn, “O God Our Help In Ages Past” will be sung, followed by a prayer by the Rev. J. R. Nelson. A hymn, “O Valiant Hearts” and the “Last Post” will be followed by one minute’s silence and “Reveille.”

Motor-cars must not park in the Domain nor will they be allowed inside the gates after 2 p.m. Limited seating accommodation will be provided for elderly people. In the event of wet weather the service will be held in the Regent Theatre and the public will be invited to place wreaths in front of the stage.

Collection boxes will be placed at the top of the hill and at the entrance gate to receive donations in aid of the Returned Services’ Association Relief Fund.
