THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. "Public Service.” FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 1943 GUMBOOTS FOR WOMEN
The request made to the Government for some arrangement whereby farmers’ wives and daughters may be given. equal opportunity with land girls, to obtain gumboots and working clothes is a very reasonable one. Under the scheme by which land girls are recruited and placed' in employment on farms, provision is made for the supply of a dress uniform and a working kit. The latter includes such items as overalls, leggings, working boots and hats, gumboots (subject to their being procurable), oilskin and leather jerkin.
To-day the wives and daughters of many farmers are engaged in arduous farm work in the absence of their menfolk, or in place of farfn employees, but it would appear that in certain localities they are having difficulty in obtaining replacement of clothing and boots. Admittedly certain items—gumboots in particular—are in short supply; but any such equipment 'which is being issued free to land girls should also be made avail T able for purchase under a system of priority by those whose lives are spent on the land and who are carrying on 'their essential jobs without the support or special encouragement of an I auxiliary service organisation.
