FIVE NEW GREENS
PAEROA GOLF CLUB
REVIEW OF PAST SEASON
THREE GREENS LEFT TO FORM
That the finances of the club, in spite of war times, were in an excellent position while the links had been considerably developed was disclosed in the thirty-fifth report presented to the annual meeting of the Paeroa Golf Club held on Monday night.
The report read as follows: —
The past playing season opened on April 18 'and closed on October 17, 1942. The condition of the greens and fairways was generally much improved and in spite of the wartime difficulty of transport a very successful season was enjoyed,
The programme was necessarily curtailed and there was no club visiting except, for one patriotic match played on Sunday, September 27. This was attended by visitors from the surrounding district and produced a sum of £8 for patriotic pui poses. 105 Members On Roll
The club championship was won by W. E. Tubman for the third time in succession. The ladies did not play a senior championship match, but the junior competition was won by Mrs J. McAnally.
At the close of* the season the records showed a total of 105 members on the roll including 19 members on military service. The detailed figures
Finance, The results shown in the club’s revenue account and balance sheet are very satisfactory. The costs have been kept down within the limits of our war-time revenue and the overdraft is below the figure to which it should have been reduced, namely £375 less £so'per annum. It will be noted that general geen-keeping cost is is very much less than at the racecourse. No Financial Problems Arrangements have been, made with Mr Johnstone for the grazing lease and even if play becomes impossible there is no danger that the club will be wound up because of financial diffi - culty. The flat ground on ttye western side of the swamp is now sown in grass and six greens in this area have been levelled and laid down with lawn grass ready to be brought into use when required. Five new greens are also laid down in the area at present ■being used and before.the end of the new season nine holes can be played in the order of the permanent layout;
Only Three Greens To Form
This means that only three gi eens remain to be formed: No. 18 and Nos. 5 and 6 which are in the far western part of the ground. These two greens will require considerable cost and labour to bring in but an 18-hole course can be played meantime with two temporary holes whenever it is required. Future conditions are of course uncertain, particularly with regard to supply of balls, but it is hoped that we may continue to enjoy the game even on a much reduced scale. The thanks of the club are tendered to all those members who have given their enthusiastic services to the club and to those who have made their cars available to their fellow members.
