NEW DREDGE FOR PAEROA

LARGEST OF ITS KIND IN N.Z.

At a special meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council held yesterday, the resolution authorising’ the raising of a loan of £lOOO for the purpose of forming and metalling that portion of Frankton road at present unmetalled and that part of Old Tauranga road between Pukewera and Frankton roads, was confirmed. sjs jjc At the Ngahina wharf the scow Waikomi is at present unloading . a new dragline dredge for the Public Works Department. TJhe dredge is an English-built machine, having a 60ft. 'boom, with a bucket of one and a-half cubic yards capacity built of lain, steel. In working condition this machine weighs 80 tons. It moves from place to place on four caterpillar wheels, each having an endless tread. It is expected that as soon as the machine is assembled it will be used on the construction •of the Ohinemuri river stop-bank, commencing, in the vicinity of Kaouiti creek; near the Te Aroha road. It is understood that this is the largest machine of its kind in New Zealand. When in full working order, it is capable of doing the work of 150 men.
