WAITAKARURU INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING HELD <A VERY INTERESTING YEAR The annual meeting of the Waitakaruru Women’s Institute was held in the .Waitakaruru Hall during March, Mrs Pacey presiding over' a -fair attendance.

A comprehensive, report .on the year’s work was read by the secretary, Mrs Mitchell, in which she stressed the amount of Patriotic work which had been accomplished. £36 4s 8d had been donated to the Waitakaruru Patriotic Committee, this substantial sum having been raised by a basket social and by an egg' drive.

The Institute has also undertaken the work of providing the district quota of soldiers’ parcels, and in additioir has during this year formarded a parcel to each local boy serving overseas.. Sums of money equivalent to the cost of soldiers’ parcels have also been given to the next of kin of five local boys who are prisoners of war/ Of the amount of £66 collected for the soldiers’ parcel fund this year £34 4s was raised by the Institute and 76 parcels were forwarded at a cost of £45.

, Praiseworthy Effort

A praiseworthy effort by Miss Marshall, a resident of the district, resulted in £4 Is being added to the parcel fund, Miss Marshall having undertaken to make a crochet jug cover to- be competed for at each Institute meeting. ' Another valuable donation was the gift of a horse by Mrs Laing, £8 15s being realised by the sale of this animal. The sum of £23 8s fid was this year’s donation to ■the -parcel -fund from the proceeds of the Sales teas. The gratitude of the community is due to Mrs Donaldson who for the past four years has been the voluntary organiser of the .

sales teas by which means the parcel fund has been so generously assisted.

A considerable amount of knitting has been done by members and their friends and at working bees organised by Mrs Laing 220 papier mache splints were made.

•Keen interest in Institute matters has been taken by members and in spite of a decreased memebrship there has been a good attendance at the meetings. Interesting programmes were arranged, two visiting lecturers, Miss Cocks Johnston and Mrs "Maloney, being much appreciated. Demonstrations given by members Were knitting socks by machine and spinning by. Mrs Cropp, and wreath-making, demonstrated by Mesdames Hinton and Cummings.

Bouquets For Officers

During the meeting Mrs McPherson presented bouquets to Mrs Pacey (president), Mrs Mitchell (secretary), Mrs Hinton (treasurer) and Mrs Godkin (librarian) as a mark of appreciation for their untiring efforts on behalf of the Institute.

Mangatarata members presented Mrs Cropp with a cut glass flower bowl in appreciation of her kindness in providing transport to meetings. The passin gof a vote of sympathy with Mrs EVans in the suddent death of her daughter, Mrs Norris, was followed by a. minute’s silence.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: 'President, Mrs Pacey; vice-presidents, Mesdames Cropp and McPherson; secretary, Mrs Mitchell; treasurer, Mrs Hinton; committee, Mesdames Dick, Hegh, Godkin, Wallis, Stretton, Cumming. Ganley and A. Coxhead, Misses L. and T. Tesen; librarian, Mrs Godkin.
