TWENTY YEARS AGO

CROQUET IN PAEROA

LARGER SCHOOL REQUIRED

KEREPEEHI’S URGENT NEED

(From the lHauraki Plains Gazette of March 29, 1943.)

A very enjoyable afternoon was spent by the ladies of the local croquet club on their green on Saturday. A progressive croquet tournament was held. The trophies were donated by the vicepresidents, Mrs Conolly and Miss Shaw. Some very close and interesting games resulted in the trophy for “A” players being won by Mrs Houlihan, and the “B section was won by Mrs Taiboys. A large gathering of players and their friends partook of afternoon tea on the lawns. * * * * The need for a larger school at Kerepeehi is' one of great urgency. At present children are . sitting three in a desk, and it is impossible to find room for more desks. The problem is aggravated by the fact that one-third of the pupils are Maoris. The school has a capacity of allowing 12 square feet for each child, for 12 pupils, yet there is a roll number of &2, and an average attendance of 57. The Education Board is being written to on the matter and stress is laid on the fact that, as Kerepeehi has a large floating population, the school may be called upon at any time to receive more pupils. At present children from the district are going to school at Ngatea and Wharepoa.
