£287 NEEDED
TASK BEFORE NETHERTON PATRIOTIC ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE’S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Netherton Patriotic Committee was held in the Netherton Hall recently, the chairman, Mr J. A. Reid, presiding over a good attendance of residents. The annual report read as follows: “Once again we have met to carry on the patriotic activities in this district and I must thank you for your assistance and financial support during the past year. “A total of 12 local men have been farewelled during the period under review. This brings the total from Netherton to 42. Apart from any men serving within New Zealand I think we 1 can justly claim that Netherton is pulling its share in the fighting forces. Quota Achieved
“The 1942 All-Purposes Appeal quota for the district was increased from £231 to £290. The greater proportion was raised by direct appeal and with the aid of the garden party held at the school late in December the first objective was reached. The
assessment for the current year is £287 and I trust that this amount will be forthcoming before the end of the year.
“A regular supply of-soldiers’ parcels has been forwarded under the district quota scheme and we are indebted to the ladies who attend to the purchase and despatch of same. These parcels are paid for out of profits derived from socials and farewells and in no way interfere with the All-Purposes Appeal funds. Contributions to the Parcels Fund can be paid to the treasurer, Mrs L. Johnson, at any time. “ In conclusion I would appeal for your continued support for the current year. Our boys overseas must have all the comforts we can send and it is oui‘ privilege and duty to see they get them.”
Officers Elected
The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr J. A. Reid; vice-presidents, Messrs R. J. Wilson, L. C. Sanderson, treasurer, Mrs L. Johnson; secretary. Mr Chas. Townshend. Motions of condolence were passed to Mrs L. Johnson, Mrs J. Gordon and Messrs A. Mills and W. Richmond, members who had sustained bereavements during the year. It was decided to hold! a further waste rubber drive in the near future. It was arranged for the pupils of the Netherton School to collect small articles while the heavy material will be collected by carriers. The depot is to be established at the school and will be under control of the headmaster, Mr C. W. Malcolm. Stock Drive Proposed The secretary advised that the district had 'been asked to raise £287 for the 1943 All Purposes Appeal. It was decided to make an appeal to all farmers in the district to donate a cull cow to be sold in aid of the fund. Mr E. Williams offered to drive all donated animals gratis. It was agreed that any contributor whose animal realised £2 10s or over would be exempt from a further call when the systematic house-to-house appeal was made.
