HAURAKI DRAINAGE.

F 1 HAURAKI UNITED AREA. MEETING OF BOARD. The Hauraki United Drainage Board held its monthly meeting at Turua on Friday, Mr H. H. Hicks presiding over Messrs R. H. Heappey, J. Hamilton, S. G. Williams, F. L. Hamilton, J. C. Miller, and J. E. Green (clerk). Cost of Pumping. The Elstow Drainage Board wrote expressing the view that the charges for electricity for drain-water pumping was too high, and that a 'confert, ence of delegates from drainage 5 boards should meet the Thames Valley Power Board. The board was asked to appoint a delegate, and although not directly interested, the board agreed to coj operate and appointed Mr Heappey. Lands Drainage Act. Draft copies of the proposed new . 1 Lands Drainage Act were received from the Department of Internal Affairs, and also from the Drainage Boards’ Association, for tl?e board’s • consideration. ' .. i - The chairman recommended that a committee be appointed to go carefully into the matter and report to a later meeting. The board had, in its experience, encountered many difficult points, and it should see whether these were cleared up in the new Act. The chairman, Mr Heappey, and the ?rclerk were appointed the committee, is Ansford’s Outlet. Mr S. W. Bagnall wrote agreeing to s accept £6 to cover the cost of removing his water-troughs from the edge of the Ansford Extension drain. A Kerepeehi Complaint. if Mrs Lawler, Kerepeehi, wrote drawing attention to the fact that her place /became flooded every winter, despite ' repeated requests to the board. The chairman said that the section i .was in a hollow, which filled rapidly i during heavy rain. It was necessary I to have an inspection made during heavy rain to find a means of effecting relief. |r ' • Grants. The Lands Drainage Department I. forwarded vouchers for £243, Te Kauri I Outlet grant; £BB9 and £3l Ils 7d for [ Hauraki United Board’s subsidy. I The clerk mentioned that all the * claims he had put in since the previi ous meeting had been met. The mat- | ter had now been cleared up. I Huirau Point Outlet. The assistant . engineer, Public i Works Department, Paeroa, advised I that the cost of material for a 3ft i flood-gate for the Baker-Madgwick I drain was approximately £3O. The I matter had been taken up with the dej partment, and its decision would be I forwarded in due course. I The chairman reported having interkg viewed Mr Grant with reference to lousing relief work for replacing this if the board paid for the material, i During the afternoon a telephone was received from the resii dent engineer, Paeroa, to the effect r that the department would have the work done as agreed upon. i Foreman’s Report. The foreman, Mr J. A. Bennett, re- ‘ ported that November had been a quiet month as regarded maintenance work, the only labour employed being for cutting thistles bn Ansford’s outlet and the Orongo-Kopuarahi Road drain. There was a heavy growth on these drains, and the work would make a big saving at cleaning time.. A few days had been spent in cutting rescue so that it could be burned. This would make the cleaning much less expen--1 sive. The Mongonui drain and the back of Mr H. K. Petersen’s section had been inspected, also the drain in front of Henwood’s. There was too , much growth in the drains at present, Abid the matter could be better attendee! to after the annual cleaning. The stop-bank behind Mr H. Hale’s land . had been leaking for a long time, but it was not serious and could easily be remedied. The road drain on Mr G. f iJ?arry’s Kerepeehi-Kopuarahi “Road ’frontage had slipped badly. The drain had been deepened but not battered, and the position was very unsatisfactory. The broken walls outside Taylor’s outlet had been attended to. The gate was safe. A wooden gate had been hung at Ansford’s outlet in place of a broken concrete gate, and it was working satisfactorily. Flaps had been ; put into the drains entering Johnston’s outlet, with the exception of Dale’s, and the fencing had been attended to. Cattle kad the free run of the stopbank along Schultz’s section, and the ijusition would not be improved when ■ big tides came. Pipes had been collected from Pekapeka Road, and also stringers from the Orongo-Kopua- . rahi road for a bridge over the drain -the board’s section on Piako Road. Tim. ?r had been delivered for a bridge over Johnston’s drain, and Mr MeKerchar had offered to do the erecting. A statement of the timber required for fluming the Shelly Beach factory outlet had been supplied to the clerk. In reply to the chairman the fore- 1 Upan detailed suggestions for improving the drainage of Mr Petersen’s land, and on Mr F. L. Hamilton’s motion it was agreed to take over the boundary drain between Messrs Nicholson and Petersen from Wharepoa Road to the old Government drain, a i:ance of 48 chains, on condition that ssrs Petersen and Pearce carried improvements to the old Government drain from the drain which the board was taking over to the Wairau Road drain, and that the settlers fence the drain. One chain of fluming outside the Shelly Beach flood-gate was authorised, and the foreman and area members were instructed to inspect the Newman’s Road outlet to see what could be done with the fluming, and in regard to deepening the drain. The foreman was given instructions to have Mr Hale’s stop-bank repaired. An inspection of Mr Parry’s roadside drain by the area members was aattiorised. Whe chairman reported that he had . sold the hay from the board's section corner of Piako Road and Kere- ■ peehi Road. Unfortunately, when the deal was made there was no bridge,

otherwise a better price could have been obtained. The Board’s Section. The question of selling the board’s section at the corner of Piako Road was raised by the chairman, who pointed out that the land was not required. The Horahia Board had paid £l2O for the two acres. Mr Heappey expressed a doubt as to whether the board had power to sell land. He noted in the proposed new Act that there was a suggestion to give drainage boards similar power as that of county councils. The clerk was instructed to inquire from the Commissioner of Crown Lands the terms of purchase and whether the board had power to sell. Holidays. The board’s office will be closed for the holidays from December 23 to January 11, 1930. When “Smithy” and his pals ran out of tobacco on that memorable flight of the “Southern Cross,” they tried to smoke leaves, but found them “awful.” They would. You can no more find a substitute for tobacco than you can find one for caviarre or Stilton cheese. But there are tobaccos—and tobaccos. The great thing to go for is purity. Really pure tobacco—i.e., that containing the minimum quantity of nicotine —is the sort. Unfortunately the imported goods are all more or less full of nicotine. The purest brands of all are those produced by the National Tobacco Co., Ltd. (pioneers of the N.Z. tobacco industry). These are subjected to w special toasting process which kills the nicotine and leaves the goods sweet, cool, and fragrant. Smoke them freely as you will, they are absolutely safe. It is worthy of special note that they are the only toasted tobaccos. Popular brands : “Cavendish” (famous sporting mixture) ; “Riverhead Gold” (mild and mellow) ; “Cut Plug No. 10” (rich, full-flavoured) ; and “Navy Cut” (a delightful blend).*
