DISTRICT NEWS.

KEREPEEHI. BURGLARS AT KEREPEEHI. Efforts to break open a safe were made at Kerepeehi last Friday night, when burglars broke into the Hauraki Plains Meat Co.’s Kerepeehi shop. The attempt was evidently the work of an amateur, and little damage was done to the safe beyond loosening the handle. Entry had been effected to the shop by removing the screws from the bolt of the back door. As far as can be discovered nothing was stolen. The police are investigating the matter, and also a number of complaints by the Lands Drainage Department of locks having been broken off sheds and storerooms at several places where works are in progress. EASTER MONDAY SPORTS. At a meeting of the Kerepeehi Sports Association last Friday evening the committee appointed to interview the purchaser of the A. and P. Society’s showground reported that a rental of £2O was wanted for the day of the sports on Easter Monday. The landowner was prepared to make a donation of £5 if the offer was accepted. The association decided to accept the offer and to hold a general meeting towards the end of January for the purpose of making arrangements for the annual event. THE KEREPEEHI DOMAIN. As the use of the A. and P. Society’s showground at Kerepeehi has been lost to the public, the people of Kerepeehi are now interesting themselves in the matter of a domain. In the early days a domain reserve was set aside, but later it was sold to the A. and P. Society foi' £6OO, and another area was reserved. This ground is still a swamp, and is quite unsuitable for a domain. Frequent efforts have been made to get the Government to revoke the present reservation and provide a domain on the hillside. At one time the Hon. A. D. McLeod, when Minister of Lands, promised to look into this matter, and assured the deputation that value for value would be given. It is now suggested that as the Government received £6OO for the domain reserve which it sold, it- should give £6OO worth of land for public recreation. The matter will be discussed at a public meeting next month.

WORKS CLOSE FOR HOLIDAYS. The Lands Drainage Department’s works on the Hauraki Plains will close down for the holidays on the evening of December 23 and will commence again on January 3.
