DISTRICT NEWS.

WAITAKARURU. KITCHEN EVENING. At the residence of Mrs Laing a “kitchen” evening was held on Thursday last in honour of Miss Kathleen Quinn, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs James Quinn, of Waitakaruru, who is shortly to be married to Mr James Nicholson, of Kerepeehi, where the, young couple will be taking up their residence in the near future. About 100 guests attended, and many and varied were the useful presents brought, some of them causing much amusement, accentuated by the fact that the nature of the reception was kept a close secret from the bride to be. A very enjoyable time was spent by one and all, Mrs Laing proving herself an ideal hostess in catering for the amusement of both young and old and so large a gathering. ! TURUA. QUEEN CARNIVAL. The Turua Plunket Society’s Baby King and Queen carnival is still under way, but will terminate on Thursday next, and in the evening the successful, competitors will be crowned. Owing to the many demands which have been made during the course of the campaign the merit of the cause has lost its appeal, and the competition • has gone rather flat. Thus, for instance, a dance organised for last Thursday evening attracted only about two dozen dancers, and probably drained instead of augmenting the Turua district’s funds.

The position of the flags indicate that the red (southern area) Queen is leading, with Turua next, and Kopuarahi last, but as previously stated it is understood that all the committees have sums of money, and that they will not hand them in until the closing stage, for fear of exciting competition. The only really popular effort at the present time in connection with the carnival is the refreshment stall at the saleyards on the days of the monthly sale.
