HIKUTAIA.

STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. During last week’s storm George Hawkins, ropeman at the Omahu mill, while splicing a steel cable received a severe shock momentarily paralysing his right arm. WAIOMIO SEASIDE RESORT. A further meeting was held at Puriri last week, when Mr E. Elliot presided over a fairly large gathering. It was unanimously decided to ask Miss Mavis Ellliot to accept the candidature of carnival queen for the Thames Valley area. It was decided that the colours be Oxford (pale) blue and gold. At the close of the meeting two cheques for £5 each were handed over to the treasurer, while other members made various donations of stock, etc. CROQUET. Owing to the inclement weather the croquet match between the Thames and Hikutaia ladies, set down to be played at Hikutaia on Wednesday evening last, had to be postponed indefinitely. PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONS. The proficiency examination for candidates from the Hikutaia and surrounding schools will be held at Hikutaia on Tuesday, December 17. NGATEA. LABOUR PARTY. The Ngatea branch of the New Zeanald Labour Party continued on Monday evening its monthly meeting which had to be adjourned on account of too much other business on the regular date. Mr W. Phillips presided over a small attendance. A letter was received from the National Secretary appealing for funds to assist the Labour candidate in'the Hutt by-election. A tarpaulin muster was taken up in the room for the purpose. Mr S. Tarver tendered his resignation on account of pressure of other business. This was accepted with regret. Mr E. N. Davies agreed to accept the office. As he was leaving the district Mr W. Phillips intimated that he would have to tender his resignation as president. This was accepted with regret, and it was decided to leave the position vacant until the annual meeting in February.
