RIFLE SHOOTING.
PAEROA DEFENCE CLUB. There was great activity on the local rifle range on Saturday last, when the members of the Paeroa Defence Club met and fired in a handicap competition for a Rose Bowl donated by the Farmers’ Trading Co., Ltd., through the manager (Mr Finnic). This was also the second shoot of the first round in the club championship arid handicap aggregate. The riflemen were kept puzzled by a strong wind blowing, but this died down considerably later in the afternoon. The conditions were seven shots and two sighters, at 500yds and 600yds ranges, with a limit up to which the handicap could be taken of 64. After a very exciting and keen fight the trophy was won by rifleman L. Morris who was shooting very well. Rifleman A. A. Jenkinson was a close second.
The members were honoured by having among them Mr H. J. Verrail, a prominent member of the Auckland City Rifle Club, who will be in the district for some time. The following are the scores : — Rfm. L. Morris, 31 at 500yds, 27 at 600yds, handicap 7, total 64 ; Rfm. A. A. Jenkinson, 32, 27, 4—63.; Rfm. R. I. Roberts, 25, 32, 5—62 ; Pres. F. C. Hubbard, 31, 27, 4—62 ; Rfm. G. W. Taylor, 29, 24,. 9—62 ; Dep.-Pres. R. Wells, 29, 29, 2—60 ; Cdt. A. Simmonds, 28, 28, 4 —60 ; Rfm. H. J. Verrail, 30, 29, 0—59 ; Rfm. E. Turton, 29, 23, 7—59 ; Capt. H.
