(From the “Ohinemuri Gazette” of November 21, 1896.) The quarterly meeting of the Star of Paeroa Lodge of Druids will be held on Wednesday. At the meeting last Wednesday evening it was decided to hold a Druids’ athletic sports meeting on January 29 next, and we believe the racecourse has been secured for the occasion. A committee has been formed, with power to add to their number, to carry out the necessary arrangements. A livery stable is being erected in Belmont Road, opposite the new hotel in course of erection. Mr Harwood, of Thames, is the proprietor. At the last meeting of the Hope of Ohinemuri Good Templars Lodge held in Paeroa, the following officers were installed for the ensuing term : Bro. C. E. Madden, Chief Templar ; Bro. R. Hoppy, Vice-Templai’; Mro. Jewell, Secretary (re-elected) ; Sis. Bramley, senr., Treasurer ; Bro. Harris, Financial Secretary ; Sis. Blair, Marshal; Bro. Hall, Guard. Bro. Rev. Norrie still remains Lodge Deputy,, and Bro. Smith Past Chief Templar. A meeting of those connected with the licensed victuallers’ business was held in Paeroa on Friday last to take into consideration the advisability of raising a general fund for the assistance, at the coming general election, of those candidates for Parliament who are opposed to prohibition. The meeting was held Mth closed doors ; but it is understood that those present were unanimous as to the necessity of taking the steps suggested for the protection of the vested interest. WAIHI GOLD MINING CO. The Record Broken. During the last four weeks ended yesterday the return for this wonderful mine is the largest made in any four weeks, being £13,143 worth of bullion from 2940 tons of ore treated. The average per ton is £4 9s sd, which we believe is the highest yet recorded. This makes the total output up to date £474,303, and the total for the present year £119,610. (From the “Ohinemuri Gazette” of November 28, 1896.) LOCALS. Mr Thomas Radford has been reelected Mayor of Thames, having polled 269 against 192 for Mr Trembath. The new Tauranga-Waihi mail service to come into force on January 1 promises a little sensation. Mr A. C. Gilman, the hew mail contractor, it is said, proposes to run an auto-car. Messrs Charles Weal and S. Lawson have purchased Darrow Bros’, coach plant at Waitekauri, and intend runding a daily coach service between Paeroa and Waitekauri.
We regret to learn that Mr C. C. Otway, surveyor, Paeroa, was severely injured by a tree falling on him on Thursday last. We have not learnt any particulars as to how the accident occurred or the extent of the injury sustained, but we believe that there is nothing serious apprehended. The entertainment which was to have been given in the Wharf Street Hall last Thursday evening under the auspices of the Paeroa Band of Hope, consisting of “Service of Song” entitled “Almost Wrecked,” did not take place, owing to paucity, of attendance. Mr Edwin Edwards and some friends, while driving out from Thames to Kopu on Thursday afternoon, had the misfortune to meet with an accident, their buggy being capsized. Fortunately no one was hurt, beyond a few bruises, and Mr Edwards was able to keep his appointment to • address a meeting of electors the same evening at Kopu. The meeting held recently with regard to the formation of a rowing club in Paeroa resulted in . over 50 names being given of persons willing to join. A meeting will, we understand, be held next Wednesday evening for the purpose of forming the.club, appointing officers, etc., and to consider offers which have been received since the last meeting of boats for sale. OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL. Election of Chairman. The statutory meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held on Wednesday last, when there were present Crs. Barry, Bowler, Cock, Corbett, Me-’ Gruer, McAndrew, Mitchell, Moore, and Nash. The first business to be transacted being to elect a chairman for the ensuing term, Mr N. Kenny, county clerk, occupied the chair temporarily. Cr. McGruer proposed that Cr. Barry be re-elected, he having performed the duties of the office during' the past term so impartially and satisfactorily. Cr. Cock said that another reason why he would support Cr. Barry’s nomination was that there were important matters which had been initiated during his late term of office which he should have every credit for finishing. Cr. Bowler seconded Cr. McGruer’s motion. Cr. Moore said that he was not in. favour of a continuous chairmanship, and thought that there should be a change. In his opinion the chairman should be a local man, and he had much pleasure in proposing, as an amendment, that Cr. Mitchell be elected to the office. Cr. Nash seconded the amendment. He thought the chairman should be a local man, as he would be more accessible, and the business of the officewould be more easily transacted and more quickly than by a chairman at Waihi. Cr. Corbett and Cr. McAndrew both, supported the appointment of Cr. Barry, considering him in every way worthy to fill the position. The amendment was first put, and was lost, the mover and the seconder being the only ones voting for' it. The motion to re-elect Cr. Barry as chairman was then carried, and Mr Kenny declared Cr. Barry as duly elected chairman for the ensuing term.
