WAR GRAVES.

THE CEMETERIES IN FRANCE. LOVINGLY TENDED. To those who have loved ones resting in their long last sleep in the military cemeteries in far away France, it will bring added consolation to hear of the loving care that is associated with the maintenance of their graves by the Imperial Government, to whom great credit is due. In the course of returning thanks for the welcome home extended to him and his wife at the Cambridge bowling green on Saturday afternoon last, Mr S. Lewis said that, with Mrs Lewis, he had made a pilgrimage to the war cemeteries on the western front, and he was greatly impressed with the appearances on all sides of the loving care associated with the upkeep of the cemeteries and more especially the individual graves. He and his wife had visited several war cemeteries in France, and everywhere the same pleasing conditions existed.

The cemeteries were beautiful in their appearance and were like well-cared-for gardens. Each had pleasing and appropriate entrances, and inside the boundaries one was struck with the tidiness. The grass was well kept, and all the edgings of grass plots and footpaths were cut even and tidy. The graves were all well cared for. The head crosses were all the same, there being no distinction whatever for rank. The; cemeteries were maintained by ex-servicemen, g After his tour, Mr Lewis said, he? came away with a greater appreciation of the Imperial Government, which had done far more than might have been expected.
