FIRE AT PAEROA.

RESIDENCE GUTTED. COVERED BY INSURANCE. A fire which will probably be written off as a total loss commenced in Mr J. Bertelsen’s house beside the brewery, Paeroa, at 4.30 o’clock on Friday afternoon. As it was an old wooden structure, the flames soon gained a good grip, and although the fire engine reached the scene in the shortest possible space of time, it was found impossible to save the building. The promptness of the brigade’s arrival, however, no doubt averted a serious conflagration and catastrophe, as one corner of the old brewery was alight, and had that structure caught alight properly the consequences would have been much more serious. As it was, the brigade confined the serious damage to Mr Bertelsen’s house, which was all that could possibly have been done under the circumstances. The building was about completely gutted. The fire started in the ceiling of the centre room ; how, it is not possible to ascertain, but it is thought that it was either through a defective chimney or electric trouble, the conduit being of the old type. The building and com tents were insured for £7OO in the Yorkshire Insurance Company.
