THE WATER SUPPLY.

DEBRIS IN DAM AND RESERVOIR AN EXCEPTIONAL QUANTITY. In an interview with the county engineer this morning it was learned that a week prior to last Saturday he had the dam and reservoir thoroughly cleaned out in readiness for the summer. months. New filter-boxes had been installed, and the dam and reservoir had never been in better condition. The deluge on Saturday last brought down huge logs and debris of all descriptions. One log, a rata, he estimates as being fully sft in diameter, while there' are many up to 3ft ; and the main reservoir is fully three parts full. The task of cleaning out this will be the heaviest that has yet confronted the council, owing to the size of the logs and the great amount of debris. In order to handle the logs some will require to be blasted. One feature that has never before shown itself is that clay has come down in large quantities, signifying that a big slip has occurred somewhere above the dam. Owing to the many urgent works that have required attention the engineer l has not yet had time to investigate this matter. As soon as the permanent staff men can be'taken off the Maratoto road a start will be made to celan out the reservoir. , Waikino and Karangahake Supplies. The water supply for Waikino and Karangahake is in much the same plight as that of Paeroa. The Karangahake reservoir had been scrubbed out with scrubbing brushes, and was in excellent condition for the summer. It is now filled with metal, which will necessitate heavy labour to clear it. The Waikino reservoir is level to the top with trees and debris of all sorts.
