WAITAWHETA VALLEY
QUESTION OF SCENIC RESERVE. THE MINISTER’S STATEMENT. The question of declaring the Waitawheta Gorge a scenic reserve, raised editorially by this papei’ some time ago, and later brought before the Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, by a deputation at Paeroa, is receiving the Government’s attention, although nothing definite has been decided yet. As nothing had been said on the subject by the Government for some considerable time, the “Hauraki Plains Gazette” addressed a letter to Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., asking if anything further had been done. This letter was forwarded to the Minister of Lands by Mr Samuel, and in answer the Hon. Mr Forbes wrote on November 4 stating that he had received a preliminary report on the question from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, following on a special inspection made by the field inspector. There were, however, one or two points which required further consideration, and the Commissioner was looking into these matters personally before submitting his final recommendations. A memorandum had been received from the Commissioner on October 22 stating that he was giving the matter early attention. In conclusion, the Minister said he hoped to have the final departmental report before him at an early date, to enable the whole position to be fully gone iifto.
