ALLEY PARK GREENS.
BOWLING. TENNIS, CROQUET. LAST SATURDAY’S OPENINGS. There was a large gathering of local people and visitors at the opening ceremony of the Hikutaia tennis, bowling, and croquet greens at the Alley Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon last. It was a beautiful day, with the greens in perfect order. For the splendid state of the greens special praise is due to Mr P. Reid, the caretaker. The Turua Band gave its services voluntarily, and rendered many fine numbers. President’s Address. In his opening remarks Mr E. Elliot, the president, referred to the success gained by the club last season, when a team from the. bowling club was able to hold the Fraser Stars against a number of challengers. It was also very pleasing to see the success gained by the tennis team under the captaincy of Mr V. Young, who went through the season without a loss, thereby winning the Mills Cup for the B championship in the Thames Valley Tennis Association’s competition. The bowling club was starting this season under most favourable conditions, having a clean sheet financially. This happy position of the club was principally due to the efforts of the ladies, to whom the members returned their sincere thanks. The president asked Mrs Elliot to throw the “jack” and Mr A. McLaren to bowl the first bowl, after which he declared the green open. Croquet Green. After opening the bowling green Mr Elliot opened the croquet green, and on behalf of Mrs Alley, the president, welcomed the large number of visiting ladies and wished the club a successful season. After Mrs Alley had hit the ball across the green Mr Elliot declared the green open for play. Tennis Club. All present then proceeded to the tennis courts, where Mr E. Turner, the president, extended a welcome to the visiting players and wished the club every success during the coming season He then presented the Mills Cup to Mr V. Young, captain of the team which had won it, and expressed the hope that the team would meet with similar success this season. After Mr Young had-jsuitably replied, and Mrs Turner had hit the ball over the net, Mr Turner declared the courts open for play. Bowling Teams. On the bowling green some interesting games took place between teams representing, the president and vicepresident. At the close of the contest it was found that the president had won, the .figures being 123 to 121. In announcing the result the president said he hoped that all the players had spent a pleasant afternoon. He wished to return, on behalf of the club, thanks to the Turua, Boys’ Band, under the conductorship of Mr H. C. Christie, which had come forward voluntarily and provided such a splendid programme of music. He called for three cheers for the band, and these were heartily given. The following returned thanks for hospitality extended to the visiting bowlers : Messrs L. Griffin (Thames), W. Taylor (Paeroa), J. McDermott (Waihi), P. Heathcote (Te Aroha).
