MAIN HIGHWAYS.
EXPENDITURE BY BOARD. HALF-YEARLY PERIOD. The Main Highways Board met at Wellington last week, when a statement of accounts was submitted for the half-yearly period ended September 30th. This showed the following receipts :—Tyre tax, £77,836 ; motor vehicle registration and license fees, £324,107 ; petrol tax, £421,242 ; total, £823,185. The authorisation in the case of the revenue fund for the six monthly period amounted to £854,000. Of this amount approximately £400,000 had been expended. In the case of the construction fund, the total sum of £912,000 had been authorised and of this sum £504,000 had been expended. The expenditure in the case of the construction fund was greater than the expenditure for any previous winter season would be recommended ter period of the board’s operations. The sum of £400,000 had been transferred from the revenue fund to the construction fund, and the further transfer ’of £200,000 was authorised. Several important paving works which were held up during the winshortly, continued the statement. The board had placed a number of unemployed on highway construction works in the past few weeks, and a further schedule had been prepared. The board had selected a number of essential construction works for the unemployed and a considerable number of men would be absorbed On highway construction.
