PRESENTATION.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN GATHERING OF MEMBERS. Members of the Paeroa School Committee gathered in the Bowling Club’s pavilion yesterday afternoon in order to make a presentation to the retiring chairman, Mr J. C. H. McDonald, who leaves to-morrow for his new post at Greymouth. In making the presentation Mr C. T. Mettam, deputy-chairman, said that during his residence in Paeroa Mr McDonald had been associated with almost every institution in the town. The Paeroa School Committee would always remember his splendid services, given always willingly, and the great work he had accomplished in its interests. In asking Mr McDonald to accept a gold-mounted pencil as a small token from the members of the committee Mr Mettam expressed, on behalf of the members and himself, best wishes to Mr and Mrs McDonald and family for their future prosperity, health, and happiness. On behalf of the staff of the Paeroa school Mr G. H. Taylor, the headmaster, thanked Mr McDonald for all he had done to aid the school. From a personal point of view the speaker said it had been a great pleasure to work with the chairman. When asked for assistance he had always been willing to give it. He was a practical and capable man as chairman, and had made things easy for the speaker. The School Committee’s excellent work was exemplified by Mr McDonald. It was with great regret that the school staff would feel the loss of his services, but they joined with him in wishing Mr and Mrs McDonald and family every future happiness. Mr McDonald in reply expressed his surprise at being the recipient of the presentation ; he little expected it. Any little work he had been able to do had been‘done with the greatest of pleasure. The work was a hobby of his. It had been a pleasure, too, to have been associated with the gentlemen on the committee, who made a happy family. It had been a pleasant privilege to work with Mr Taylor. There were lots of things the committee as laymen had not a grasp of, and in these the headmaster had always been ready with advice. In conclusion Mr McDonald said it was a great pity that more people did not take an interest in the school’s work —it was every citizen's duty to do so. The Paeroa school was one to be proud of.
