DISTRICT ESTIMATES.
ROADS, DRAINS, AND RIVERS. The Public Works Estimates for the year ending March 31, 1930, contain the following items of local and district interest: — Swamp Drainage : Waihi drainage area, £3500. Postal and Telegraph : Paeroa, garage to post office, £5OO ; Thames, on account of £lO,OOO, towards new post office, £5OOO. Harbour Works. Coromandel, new wharf, £ for £, on account of £3500, £lOOO. (This work is at present being considered by the Coromandel County Council.) Miranda wharf, £ for £, £BO ; Port Jackson, removal of rocks, £6O (completed) ; Whangamata, wharf, £ for £, £2OB (recently completed) ; Whitianga, wharf, Mercury Bay, £ for £, on account of £2OOO, £5OO. (Coromandel County Council is at present making arrangements for the commencement of this work.) Lands Improvement. Elstow Drainage Board, on account of £9922, £ for £, £5OOO ; Hauraki Pastoral areas, Thames, Ohinemuri, and Coromandel (formation, construction, and compensation), £3851. Hauraki Plains (road metalling), on account of £7246, £1 for £2, £5OOO ; Hauraki Plains (tax planting), £1935 ; Hauraki Plains (water supply), on account of £BOOO, £1 for £4, £5575 ; Hauraki Plains (water supply, Waitakaruru supplementary scheme), £1 for £4, £450 ; Hauraki Plains West Drainage Board, £150; Hauraki Plains West Drainage Board (widening and deepening drains), £1 for £2, £2OO ; Hauraki United Drainage Board, £220, £1 for £2, £795 £1 for £3, total, £lOl5 ; Orongo Settlement (deepening and cleaning ditches and drains), £168; Piako River stop-bank (grant to Waitoa Drainage Board, etc.), £154; Piako River stop-bank (near Ngatea), £2 for £l, £793 ; Piako River, west bank (flood-gates), £411; Raupo Drainage Board (internal drainage), £ for £, £2100; Tahuna Drainage (grant to Tahuna Drainage Board), £630. River Improvements. Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers Improvement, £25,000. On this scheme a net total of £52,310 (including wages) was spent in 1928-29; The total expenditure to March 31, 1929, was £660,299, leaving the estimated amount required to complete the work,; £BB,OOO. On the subject of this work the Minister pf Public Works said in his statement: “The heavy stop-bank construction work on the lower Waihou River was practically completed during the year, the erection of several small flood-gates and other small miscellaneous items only remaining to be finished. As a result of the heavy flood of July last year, rather extensive seepages showed in the Upper Waihou system of stop-banks, so that further strengthening and raising of the bank in places is required. This work, though heavy, is now being expeditiously gone on with, and with its conclusion the construction works involved in the scheme may then be regarded as completed.” In addition to the Minister’s remarks, it is learned that part of the work during the ensuing year will be on internal drainage of the area. Hauraki Plains Settlement. Hauraki Plains Settlement Account (construction and carrying on works, acquisition of land for the more effective carrying out of drainage operations, and compensation for works on private lands), net total, £34,500. On this scheme a net total of £17,989 was expended in 1928-29. The total expenditure to March 31, 1929, was £849,937, leaving an estimated amount of £385,000 required to complete the work. Main Highways. Number 2 Highways District (Auckland South) : Hamilton-Paeroa (maintenance), £2 for £l, £400;; Nga-tea-Waharoa, via Morrinsville (payment for old work, £1 for £2, £562 ; Orongo-Netherton (maintenance), £2 for £l, £154 ; Paeroa-Kopu, free, £770 (Kirikiri Cut and Hikutaia Bridge erosion), £2 for £l',- £6OO (Onetai Bridge), £1 for £, £350 (approaches to Kirikiri Bridge) ; total, £1720. Pipi-roa-Coromandel, free, £7014, local authorities’ proportion recoverable (widening coast road and small items incidental to Kopu Bridge) ; £ for £, £175 (Kauaeranga Bridge approaches) ; total, £7189. Pokeno-Waihi, free, £3OO, part recoverable from local authority and Railways Department, £2 for £l, £1448 (Waitakaruru Bridge) ; total, £1748. Tahuna-Ohinewai Bridge, £ for £, £267. Waitoa-Maukoro ( Piako River bridge), £2 foi' £l, £1767.
