The natives of Matakana Island are now busy prepai’ing their, lands for the planting of maize, and it is expected that the area to be planted in this crop will exceed last year’s total (says the Bay of Plenty Times). Most of the grain is sold either at Tauranga or Katikati, a large quantity being sent away by rail from each place. The growing of kumeras is receiving much attention and each season the natives have a substantial surplus for sale. This crop is a very payable one. Dairying is steadily progressing, the cream being carted across to Matahui Point, and there transferred to a lorry. There is a large area of land at Matakana which is very suitable for dairying and the expansion of this important industry on . the island,, "may: confidently be looked for.
