RIFLE SHOOTING.

■ PAEROA DEFENCE CLUB. SATURDAY’S PRACTICE SHOOT.' On Saturday last the members of the Paeroa Defence Rifle Club met on the local rifle range in continuance of their practice over all the ranges before commencing the club competitions and any trophy shoots. This day’s practice was devoted to 500 and 600 yards ranges. The weather was good, but as far as shooting conditions were concerned it was one of the trickiest days experienced by the members on the range.# As it happened, the highest score for the day was registered by one of the youngest members of the club, Cadet A. Simmonds. Following are the details: Cadet A. Simmonds, 31 at 500yds, 28 at 600yds, total 59 ; Rfm. L. Morris, 29, 29—58 ; Rfm. P. R. Hubbard, 30, 28 —58 ; Pres. F. C. Hubbard, 30, 27—57 ; Dep.-Pres. R. I. Wells, 31, 26 —57 ; Capt. H. Simmonds, 30, 26—56; Rfm. A. A. Jenkinson, 25, 29—54 ; Rfm. R. I. Roberts, 28, 25—53 ; Rfm. E. Turton, 27, 24—51 ; Rfm. R. W. Roberts, 27, 24—51 ; Rfm. H. A. Morrison, 22, 19—41 ; Rfm. W. A. Reid, 26, retired—26. Next Saturday’s practice will be at 300 and 600 yards ranges. On Monday, Labour Day, a party of nine members of this club journeyed to Waihi to join in the official opening of the Waihi Rifle Club. The shooting was commenced in misty rain, but within half an hour it was coming down in a deluge, with a fairly strong wind. One gust of win got behind the paper on one target which had become saturated with rain and tore it off in one complete sheet, leaving the bare scrim on the wooden frame. The order to cease fire was then given, and all adjourned to the range shed to wait and see if the rain would abate. In the meantime the Waihi Club entertained the visitors, who included a party from Thames, to luncheon. The storm showed no signs of abating, and at 2 p.m. it was . resolved to call the event off. A meeting was then held, and as the Waihi weather had been very inappropriate on the. last two Labour Days, it was decided to have this annual function alternately at the three towns, Waihi, Paeroa, and Thames, next year at Paeroa.
