CO-OP. BACON CO.

REIMBURSING GUARANTORS.

AN APPEAL TO FARMERS.

The committee appointed at the annual meeting of the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company last week has issued the following appeal to farmers throughout the Auckland province :— “At the recent annual meeting of the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co. a resolution was passed appointing Messrs F. C. Hansen (Waitoa), F. M. Strange (Te Aroha), and S. H. Judd (Cambridge) a committee to devise ways and means of raising funds to reimburse Messrs J. Barough, E. C. Banks, and the estate of the late James Paterson for the loss they each sustained when the bank called up their guarantee to the Co-operative Bacon Company, amounting in each case to over £5500.

“As you know, the matter has been raised several times previously, and a certain amount was subscribed (mostly by shareholders of the N.Z. Cooperative Dairy Company), but the assistance so given amounted to only £l5OO, and is, therefore, totally inadequate “The committee believes that if a thorough canvass for funds is made in every district, of all settlers, the response will be generous and will enable the committee to carry out satisfactorily the work foi’ which it was appointed. “It has therefore been decided to ask the conveners of butter and cheese committees, wherever such is possible, and, failing these, representative men in each district, to undertake a canvass of all settlers in the various areas, with the above objective. “It has been decided to call the fund ‘The Auckland Provincial Farmers’ Debt of Honour Reimbursement Fund.’ “The committee feels confident that those who are asked to undertake the duty of canvassing their districts will give their services ungrudgingly, as it is only by so doing that the great hardship the guarantors to the co-* operative enterprise have endured through their service to the farming community can ever be removed. “Farmers, show the country that when the need arises you can respond as generously as any other section of the community. F. C. HANSEN, Waitoa. F. M. STRANGE, Te Aroha. . S. H. JUDD, Cambridge.” Donations Acknowledged. The following 1 donations have already been received, although active personal canvassing has not yet commenced :—

A pleasing feature has been the number of substantial donations received from farmers who were not interested in any way in the Bacon Company, but who are deeply interested in this question from the co-operative standpoint.
