MILITARY NOTES.

RIFLE CLUB. The Thames Valley Defence Rifle Club, Morrinsville, has been re-formed after a lapse of several years. It has now a membership of 40, with Mr F. C. Kennedy, a well-known New Zealand shot, as president, and Mr C. McDavitt as secretary. The club has its own range some seven miles out of town. The opening of the range will take place on Saturday next, October 26, when the Mayor of Morrinsville will fire the first shot. Officials and members of other rifle clubs in the district are invited to attend. TRAINING. Consolidated training for first-year territorials and cadets will take place at Putaruru under Staff SergeantMajor W. Bates, D.C.M., from October 29 to November 2. Twelve territorials and 30 cadets are expected to take part in the training, which will consist of physical, infantry, and weapon training. The territorials will undergo a Lewis-gun course. The whole of the permanent staff and staff corps of the Northern Command will undergo an annual refresher course at Narrow Neck from December 1 to 14. PUBLIC SERVICE SHOOT. The winner of the Croxton Cup, of the Public Service Miniature Rifle Club, Wellington, for the second quarter was W. A. Nicholson, with the phenomenal gun score of 553, dropping only seven points in eight shots. The quarterly Inter-Departmental teams competition for the Public Service Association’s Shield resulted in a win for the Internal Affairs Department. The results were as follows : Internal Affairs, Hendry 98, Clark 96, Ellison 96, Miss Cave 94, total, 384 ; Audit, total 383 ; Education, total 382; Lands and Survey, total 379 ; Post and Telegraph, total 378. THE HAURAKI REGIMENT. Lionel Robert Wilkinson to be 2nd lieutenant (on probation), and posted to the 2nd C Battalion. Dated October 1, 1929.
