FARMERS PLEASED.
IDEAL WEATHER ON PLAINS. PRODUCTION BOUNDING UP. Hauraki Plains farmers are In good humour at the present time on account of the very beneficial rains which fell last week-end, particularly on Sunday night, and the splendid growing weather which has followed. During the last few days the growth of pastures has been wonderful, and it has been almost possible to see the grass grow. Conditions are ideal for, and the indications certainly point to, a season of record production. The rain came just at the right time, for grave fears had been held that the dry spell was going to extend until the time of the normal spring flush of feed had passed, in which case the prospects for the hot summer weather period would not be cheering. But now that good, soaking rain has fallen, all fears are removed, and even the dry spell has proved a blessing. The soil is now in fine order for working, and much harrowing is being done to remove the effects of winter. Paddocks are already being shut up for early hay.
The great growth of feed during the week has caused an increase in the milk production which is astounding. Some of the cheese factories have jumped up to their capacity during the week. Cream cartage contractors report that many farmers have been caught with insufficient eream-cans, and that they bring their surplus cream to the roadside in buckets to tip into the cans which the carrier is returning from the previous day’s trip. These delays are causing many carriers to run late.
