PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. SCHOOL CONVEYANCE. At the monthly meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee Mr C. T. Mettam, deputy-chairman, presided over Messrs J. W. Brocket, C. Holes, W. Smith, G. H. Taylor (headmaster), and G. E. Allen (secretary). Conveyance to School.

The Te Uku School Committee wrote stating that as it understood the plan of a centralised school had been in operation for some time at Paeroa, and as the settlers in the Te Uku district were considering the possibility of a centralised school there, it asked for the following information

The greatest distance from which the lorries or buses came, and the distance children might be expected to travel to the buses, and if parents of children having a considerable distance to travel appeared to be satisfied with the arrangement. Had the system resulted in any children just out of reach of the service being deprived of what schooling they would otherwise have had. Did the buses run jn one or more main routes only, or did they find it practicable to go up side roads where these were metalled. Did teachers drive the buses, or had contracts been let to bus proprietors, service car companies, or others. Had it been found possible to get local farmers or carriers to do the work. Where children had to ride to the buses, had it generally been found that they could obtain accommodation for their ponies at the point at which they met the bus. How many children used the system of transport. What had been the cost of transport. The chairman said that as far as conveyance methods to Paeroa school had been concerned, they were a complete failure after constant trouble. Therefore, the committee would not be able to answer the question. It was decided to refer Te Uku to Pio Pio, which place, the headmaster stated, had a satisfactory system, and to the Auckland Education Board, at the same time enclosing a copy of the “Hauraki Plains Gazette” containing Mr Samuel’s remarks in the House and the interview with Mr McDonald on the subject which appears elsewhere in this issue. Accounts. Accounts totalling £7 2s 7d were certified as correct and forwarded on to the Auckland Education Board for payment. Accounts totalling £4 3s 4d were passed for payment subject to being found correct. A dental clinic account for 15s 6d was passed for payment subject to being found correct. Visiting Committee. Messrs J. C. H. McDonald and W. Smith were appointed the visiting committee for August.
