Because the Eltham newspaper has been compelled to criticise the Mayor, the Council’s printing has been sent to another town. The Argus says : "If it is the fixed policy of the Council to deprive the Argus of all Borough printing, it is well that their policy should be known to everybody. But we do not believe that the councillors as a whole approve of such a policy, and we are sure that the ratepayers do not approve of it, for they have the sense to recognize that the general adoption of a policy of sending trade to another town means the wrecking of their own town.
The report of the opening for the season of the Paeroa Bowling Club has been unavoidably held over until Wednesday owing to pressure on space.
The annual report of the Auckland Automobile Association shows an income of £14,299 for the 15 months up to August 31 last. This was £2642 in excess of expenditure. The largest expense was the serivce department, with £3388 for the operation of the two motor-cars and the payment of wages. Office and administrative expenses were £3149, the motor-cycle patrols accounted for £2063, sign-post-ing £1565, and agency expenses £1489. The year ended with a membership of 11,148.
At the Power Board meeting on Tuesday Mr F. E. Flatt asked if the Government had replied to the board’s letter of September 6, in which the Public Works Department was requested to detail measures taken for the safety of the headworks at Arapuni, why was it inactive when the. first big slip occurred there, and to whom the blame was due for failure or negligence to properly safe-guard the falls against erosion. Mr F. M. Strange, the chairman, replied in the negative. Mr - J. Price remarked that the only excuse for no reply from the Minister was that the questions were giving the Minister any amount of thought of how to answer. The only thing to do was to wait. Mr Flatt considered that any business concern would have replied immediately,. The department, out of courtesy, might even have answered with a "no.” Whereupon Mr J. Anderson remarked dryly, “You wouldn’t expect that from a Government department, would you ?”
On account of the numerous other’ attractions in Turua in the next few months the Turua Tennis Club decided at a special general meeting on Wednesday evening to postpone its annual fete until early in the new year.
