A commencement was made on Tuesday with the smoothing of the clay roads in the Patetonga and Kaihere districts. On the same day another of the council’s tractors and graders commenced preparing Pouarua Road preparatory to metalling next week. This plant will shortly move on to Miranda Road. Dealing with exercise in its association with health, in the course of his lecture in Cambridge last week Dr. A. G. Waddell said that violent exercise should not be indulged in haphazardly, for regard must be paid to the age and condition of the individual. He thought it wrong to indulge in violent exercise on Saturdays and wholly neglect it for the rest of the week. “Newman had said,’ stated Dr. Waddell, “that it is important to realise that exercise is something more than ‘drill and jerks.’ ”
