• In Paeroa during September' there were four births, two deaths, and four marriages, as against five, 1 and 1, respectively, the same month last year.
A party of 300. Americans sailed from San Francisco last week on a Pacific cruise under the auspices of the San Francisco Chamber' of Commerce. This will include Australia and New Zealand, Auckland being reached on December 1. The party is travelling by the Matson liner Malolo, of 20,000 tons.
In answer to a question as to when the Bombay deviation would be reopened and when the metalling would be completed, Mr F. G. Farrell, a member of the Auckland Council of the A.A.A., speaking at the annual meeting of the Hamilton Agency of the Automobile Association last week, stated that a deadlock had arisen between the Franklin County Council arid the Highways Board. The board had offered the council £3 to £1 subsidy, but the council wanted the board to bear the whole of the cost. The board had promised an announcement on the matter shortly.
Mr Ben Gwilliam notified the public that he has commenced business as a general and motor engineer in the premises adjoining Mr Dave McWatters, Belmont Road, and previously occupied by the late Mr John Hubbard.

The Paeroa Cricket Club will hold a meeting to-morrow night in the supper-room of the Gaiety Theatre to discuss the coming season. A proposal to have a three-cornered cricket tournament in the Paeroa district between Paeroa, Karangahake, and the High School will come up for consideration, as well as any other matters of interest to cricketers. Everyone interested, whether a member or not, is invited to be present.

The Kaihere soldier settlers now established on the Kerepeehi block are faced with a serious shortage of drinking water for their stock, and are discussing a co-operative scheme to pump water from the Piako River or the Elstow canal.
So far there has been little movement in cricket circles on the Hauraki Plains, and as yet only two clubs have had their annual general meetings. It has been rumoured that a club was to be formed in Kerepeehi, but this is without foundation at present, as the enthusiasts realise that there are insufficient players available for a club to maintain a full team throughout the season. As in previous years, the Kerepeehi players hope to join the Ngatea club.
