The discing of the Miranda road as soon as possible was authorised at yesterday’s special meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. Lord Ebbisham (Lord-Mayor of London 1926-27) has become the treasurer of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes in succession to the late Mr Howard Williams. The progress of the WaitakaruruMaukoro canal is reported in the annual report of the Chief Drainage Engineer of March 31 last. Good progress had been made during the year, and the canal-head was advanced 65 chains and was then 6 miles 35 chains from the main road bridge at Waitakaruru and 25 chains north jf the Torehape road. A section of the canal commenced last year had also been deepened. The highest point in the canal route had been passed, and four dams had been used to raise the water-level of the canal 30ft above mean sea level. The year’s output was 72,881 cubic yards, and the unit cost 5.53 d.
