CARE OF THE CEMETERY.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The Rev. Father Taylor will have my hearty support in his Chris-tian-like appeal for something to be done by way of cleaning up our public burial ground, which is in a shocking condition, being almost overrun with blackberry and other noxious weeds. It is almost a year ago since the reverend gentleman made a similar appeal, which was acknowledged, and views were expressed that the various local bodies, with the Churches, would co-operate and have the cemetery grounds cleaned. However, the matter was entirely forgotten, and nothing has been dor?. It seems to me that, with the unexpected realisation of proceeds and the unqualified success of the recent carnival, a small sum of the moneys collected might be wisely diverted to the cause indicated. I am aware that there are difficulties in the way of diverting moneys raised for specific purposes. I feel, however, that legal bars and other impediments will speedily disappear when the matter is viewed in the light of such a worthy object. Whilst realising the splendid efforts made, and the ready response of the people to raise the necessary funds for a suitable memorial to our fallen soldiers, in the face of such magnanimity we completely forget the simple duty of keeping clean the surroundings of the graves of the relatives of the very soldiers for whom we are erecting a monument in the form of a cenotaph.
W. H. TAYLOR, Hill Street, Paeroa. Monday, September 23, 1929.
