The flaxmill at Mangaiti commenced work on Monday last on the flax which cutters have been bringing in. A number of men are now employed in the mill’s activities.
The hockey match on Saturday between teams representing Paeroa and Hikutaia resulted in a draw, 2 all. Misses B. Hunter and I. Small scored a goal each for Paeroa, and Misses J. and R. Alley netted the points for Hikutaia.
Finlay’s Crossing, Cadman Road, has claimed a victim at last. Not being able to satisfy its appetite with a human sacrifice, it made certain of a horse. A horse which, like the cow in the Rotokohu drain, nobody has the slightest interest in now as to ownership, had been wandering round the neighbourhood of the crossing for some days past, strayed on to the line on Monday night and tried conclusions with the oncoming express. The train won.
That fruit-growing in England is by no means a profitable industry was stated to the Official Assignee at Wellington on Friday by an Englishman who, after losing £9OOO in fruit-farm-ing in Kent, is now selling motor-cars in Wellington.
No objections to the ratepayers’ list of the Hauraki Plains West Drainage Board were stated at the Magistrate’s Court at Thames, and the list was accordingly signed by the magistrate.
